A female swimmer has died in a shark attack in the waters off a popular tourist spot on Australia’s east coast, authorities said.

Twenty-four hours after local lifesaver Charlize Zmuda was fatally attacked by a shark at a popular Bribie Island beach, more than a thousand locals have gathered at a vigil for the teen.

On 2 January, surfer Lance Appleby was killed by a shark at Granites Beach in South Australia. Just days earlier, on 28 December, 40-year-old chaplain Luke Walford was fatally bitten while spearfishing near the Keppel Bay Islands in Queensland.
