2 avalanches, 1 fatal, reported in Big Cottonwood Canyon and Park City
Two avalanches, one fatal, were reported Saturday afternoon in Summit County’s Dutch Draw area and Big Cottonwood Canyon. Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Arlan Bennett confirmed that one person was killed in a separate avalanche, and another rescued in the east bowl of the Silver Fork area of Big Cottonwood Canyon, near Alta Ski Area.

Authorities have identified the victim killed in the Big Cottonwood Canyon avalanche over the weekend as Higinio Juan Gonzales, 59, of Salt Lake City.
Utah Avalanche Kills Skier in Big Cottonwood Canyon
An avalanche in Utah’s Big Cottonwood Canyon killed one person, and sent another to the hospital with significant leg injuries. The slide happened on February 8, 2025. Two skiers were caught in the East Bowl of Silver Fork. The skier who died was killed from trauma, the Utah Avalanche Center reported. The other was evacuated via helicopter.
