With SNAP aid in limbo, groups urge handing out food alongside Halloween candy
With the federal government shutdown threatening November SNAP payments, some community groups are encouraging families to include shelf-stable kid foods alongside Halloween candy this year.
Erika Dutka, who depends on SNAP to feed herself and her three children in Archbald, Pennsylvania, went to a “trunk or treat” Sunday with people giving out candy from the trunks of cars. She said she was relieved to get packs of ramen, oatmeal, juice, pretzels and fruit snacks in addition to sweet treats.
Amid the fear and trepidation, community members are stepping up where they can to combat hampered festivities and traditions with a helping hand.
A Hampden resident is working to help her neighbors in need by handing out food alongside candy this Halloween.
