The earthly remains of most of history’s 266 popes (plus some European royals) are buried in Rome—in dozens of crypts, catacombs, and cemeteries in, under, and around the city.

Pope Francis’ wooden coffin will be sealed on Friday night, in a private rite that officially ends three days of his body lying in state at the Vatican.

The Vatican said Friday some 150,000 mourners have filed past the body of Pope Francis, who is lying in state in St. Peter's Basilica.
