CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- NASCAR approved a carbon monoxide filter Friday to allow drivers to breathe easier during races that can last as long as five hours.

The "filter" converts the CO into carbon dioxide, which is a harmless gas. We breathe out carbon dioxide every time we exhale and plants use CO2 to produce oxygen.

Now, what about a carbon monoxide detector? Kathryn Gillett, 44, from Wichita, said she bought a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector two years ago for a stay at an apartment in Buenos Aires.

"Spend the money on a carbon monoxide detector," said Hannan. "They aren't hugely expensive. You can find them at Walmart.
