Refurbishment works are underway after it was confirmed that Omniplex will take over the former Empire Cinema in Sunniside, Sunderland city centre.

The Empire cinemas that closed on Friday are in Bishop's Stortford, Catterick Garrison, Sunderland, Swindon, Walthamstow and Wigan. The closures leave Sunderland and Wigan with no main cinema.

The city's only cinema closed in July 2023 after Empire Cinemas went into administration.
