BRISTOL — As I write this I can hear the hum of fluorescent light bulbs above me as they light my office. I hadn’t given them much thought over the years unless one of the bulbs burned out.
By the 1940s, 1,000-hour bulbs became the standard. Eventually, the cartel was exposed, and in 1953, General Electric and other industry leaders were banned from limiting the light bulb’s life span.
