"Mad Magazine" cartoonist Al Jaffee — who worked to create one of the satirical publication's signature features, the back-cover "Fold-In" — has died. He turned 102 on March 13.

Al Jaffee died April 10, 2023 in New York at age 102. Over a 72-year career in art and illustrations, he became best known as one of Mad magazine’s longest-tenured cartoonists and writers.

At its peak in 1974, Mad sold 2.1 million copies. It was wildly profitable, even though Bill Gaines (its publisher from the magazine's founding until his death in 1992) refused to accept advertising.
