First Apple added dark mode icons, then it gave us tinted icons. Now, Apple has made its stance on the future of icons clear with the introduction of Liquid Glass.

The magic behind the trick is assigning a transparent icon to a shortcut and then pinning that shortcut to the taskbar as a spacer in between the sets of icons you want to keep separate.

The proposed new icons have colour gradients, adding more depth to the layers, confirming that 3D is very much back. This makes them feel more fun perhaps – less dull and serious Microsoft Office.

Starting in early April, developers will be able to upload new icons that conform to the new design in the Play Store console, which marks the beginning of the transition period.

The icons are based on the Fluent Design System, similar to the new Office icons that rolled out last year. But now, all of Microsoft's first-party apps are getting redone.
