The Penobscot Narrows Bridge had to be shut down Sunday morning after large chunks of ice fell several hundred feet down onto passing vehicles, authorities said.

The Penobscot Narrows Observatory in Prospect will remain open until October 31st.

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge near Bucksport shut down at noon Sunday and was expected to remain closed until at least Monday afternoon because of melting ice on the bridge’s overhead cables.

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge will soon have suicide-prevention barriers installed, with construction expected to be completed by July.
