AUSTIN (KXAN) — The USDA recently updated their Plant Hardiness Zone Maps (PHZM) to reflect the latest 30-year averages published by the National Weather Service.

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The USDA has recently released a new Plant Hardiness Zone Map for 2023 which shows the lowest average winter temperatures across the nation.

Zone 9a and 9b – Found along the Gulf Coast, South Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley. Zone 10a – Found in the southern tip of Texas, near Brownsville. Find your zone by zip code.

Thirty years later in 1990, the USDA released an updated Plant Hardiness Zone Map. This map took data from close to 8,000 weather stations and used data from the period from 1974 to 1986.

The USDA divides the United States into seven planting regions, known as hardiness zones, which were most recently updated in 2023. The maps below show these planting regions.
