When you have the Treasure Map, equip it and follow the dotted line that it paints across your screen. Your goal is to reach the end of the line, where you will find the buried treasure.

When actively holding the map, dotted red lines appear that lead the player towards the treasure, but a large beacon of light similar to a world marker also appears for the player holding it.
