Democrats sponsoring the bill to remove Washington’s image from the state flag say he has “limited historical connection to the state itself.”

House Bill 1938 would create a Washington State Flag Redesign Committee that would oversee the process of designing and adopting a new flag "that symbolizes unity and represents the unique character of the state," according to the bill text.

Some members of the Washington State Legislature want to initiate a process to redesign the state flag, which could see the removal of George Washington’s portrait.

They site that George Washington's lack of connection to the State means his image is "less meaningful" as a symbol to the State.
