A hallmark has been a byword for quality for centuries, but the 700 year practice of stamping precious metals with an official label could be scrapped as part of a Government drive to cut red tape.

In furtherance of this Notification, the Central Government, vide S.O. 205(E) dated 15.01.2020 issued the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020 (‘2020 Order’).

Hallmarking will enable consumers/jewellery buyers to make authentic choices and save them from unnecessary confusion while buying gold. At present, only 30% of Indian gold jewellery is hallmarked.

Hallmarking on gold jewellery and related items is set to become mandatory from Tuesday after the government extended the earlier June 1 deadline in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
