As many as 10 people have died in a shooting at a school in Sweden, police have confirmed. The deadly attack happened on Tuesday afternoon at Risbergska School, an adult education centre, in the city of Örebro, about 125 miles west of Stockholm.

Prime minister Ulf Kristersson on Tuesday said the attack was the worst mass shooting in Swedish history, calling it a “painful day”, while king Carl XVI Gustav conveyed his condolences. Police said the motive for the shooting at the Risbergska school in Örebro, some 200km (125 miles) west of Stockholm, was not immediately known.

School attacks are relatively rare in Sweden, but the country has suffered shootings and bombings linked to gang violence that kill dozens of people each year.
