The Chicago Cubs got an All-Star outing from their only All-Star pitcher on Saturday when Matthew Boyd delivered an 8-inning, 4-hit shutout performance in a 5-2 win over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

The Chicago Cubs signed Matthew Boyd this offseason for two years and $29 million. He has since pitched like one of the best pitchers on the planet.

Pitching is certainly an area of need for the Cubs, but it sure doesn’t feel like it when Matthew Boyd is on the mound. In a streak of exceptional starts, the All-Star left-hander delivered his best yet on Saturday afternoon,

The lefty starting pitcher was named to the NL All-Star squad Sunday, joining his two teammates, who were previously announced as elected starters in the outfield.

“Boyd leads the Cubs in innings pitched, and his 12 quality starts account for a third of Chicago's total,” wrote CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson. “His contributions have been worth an estimated 2.1 Wins Above Replacement, according to Baseball Reference's calculations.”

The Guardians gave Matthew Boyd the opportunity to mount a career comeback a year ago -- a chance he seized with a strong performance down the stretch that culminated in a playoff run with Cleveland.
