Apple’s investment in the mining company MP Materials will also help the tech giant reduce its dependence on China for rare earth metals.

Apple has signed a $500-million deal with Pentagon-backed MP Materials for a supply of rare earth magnets, one of the first U.S. tech companies to ink an agreement that aims to centralize its supply chain inside the country.

MP Materials will supply Apple with magnets it produces at a Texas facility, expanding Apple’s U.S. supply chain at a time when President Trump has pressured Apple to do so.
