Greyhound bus stations are being shut down and redeveloped. The closures are leaving passengers without a warm place to get a snack, use the restroom or wait for the bus.
Pensacola’s longtime Greyhound bus station, at 505 W. Burgess Road, near Highway 29 in Car City permanently closed in mid-May and no longer serves as a drop off or pick up location for the bus line.
Dozens of downtown bus stations have been sold off, and many are now shuttered. For low-income bus passengers, that often means no place to eat, shelter or use the restroom while waiting for a ride.
"Bus stations are a huge part of Americana," says Joseph Schwieterman, an expert on bus travel at DePaul University in Chicago. "In many cities, they were the only businesses open around the clock.
