The M4 MacBook Pro models may be featuring quantum dot technology. The jury is still out on whether these displays are better than before.

The new M4 MacBook Pros that launched last month have an unadvertised change with new quantum dot displays, according to display industry analyst Ross Young and reported by 9to5Mac. Young posted on X that Apple is adopting quantum dot displays for the first time and that it's using a version of the film that is free of cadmium,

Apple's new M4 MacBook Pro has a significant upgrade to the display, and the company somehow forgot to mention it.

That's according to prominent display analyst Ross Young, anyway. Young took to X on Thursday to point out that Apple has adopted a "quantum dot" display for the M4 MacBook Pro.

The M4 MacBook Pro has a hidden feature: quantum dot tech in the display. As such, the latest systems have an expanded color range and should deliver improved motion performance.

It’ll be interesting to see if Apple adopts QD film for the M4 MacBook Air, which uses an LED display, instead of the mini-LED display in the MacBook Pro. Reports say that the new Air will be revealed in the spring of 2025 and it’s expected to be nothing more than a chip upgrade.

The M4's single-core performance is between 14 and 21 percent faster than the M3s in our tests, and tests that use all the CPU cores are usually 20 or 30 percent faster. The GPU is occasionally as much as 33 percent faster than the M3 in our tests, though more often, the improvements are in the single or low double digits.

As I wrote in my review, my MacBook Pro M4 is a performance beast that I use hours a day. And it has a benefit I didn’t even realize. In an X post display analyst Ross Young says Apple used a quantum dot film instead of a red KSF phosphor film in the laptop.
