The sun god One other god was very important, if only briefly. Fed up with the power of the priests honoring Amen-Re, Pharaoh Amenhotep III switched attention to the minor sun god, Aten.

The site also hosts numerous temples dedicated to the Egyptian sun god, Aten, who was the subject of a new religion started by Pharaoh Akhenaten called Atenism.

There is, of course, no evidence linking the cult of Aten to today's monotheisic beliefs, ... a combination of Thebes' deity Amun and the northern Egyptian sun god Ra.
