Ahead of "Senior Skip Day" and Spring Break, the New Smyrna Beach Police Department is establishing a Special Event Zone, which allows for increased fines and higher penalties for those in violation of certain safety provisions.

Crowds of high schoolers started making their way to New Smyrna Beach on Friday. "This is a really popular beach for our school," said one Seminole High School student. "All the people we know who go to high school come here.

The action is tied to expected big teen crowds that could arrive Thursday for a "Senior Skip Day" ahead of next week's official spring break.

The New Smyrna Beach Police Department is establishing a special event zone for Thursday after an unpermitted event was announced. Hundreds of Central Florida teens are planning to make their way to the city for Senior Skip Day.
