Since Windows 95, Microsoft has been storing their system icons for folders, devices, settings, control panels, and applications in the C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll file.

Some of the icons have remained pretty much unchanged since Windows 95 arrived over 25 years ago. There are images of floppy disk and CD drives, computer chips, hibernation mode, networking, and more.

As a part of 'sweeping visual rejuvenation' planned for later this year, Microsoft is finally preparing to refresh its Windows 95-era icons.
