The first day of the 2025 MLB Draft featured some major early surprises – and three players from one prep school.
The first 105 picks in the 2025 draft process will take place on Sunday night. The first round only features 27 picks this year as the Dodgers, Mets and Yankees were all stripped of their first-round selections as penalties for spending above luxury-tax thresholds.
For the first time since 2019, before Brian Barber took over as amateur scouting director, the Phillies used their first-round draft pick on a college player, taking right-hander Gage Wood from the University of Arkansas with the 26th overall selection Sunday night.
On Sunday afternoon, Summit centerfielder Slater de Brun was selected by the Baltimore Orioles with the 37th pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. A Vanderbilt commit, de Brun is one of Oregon’s top fielders. He ended his senior season with a .370 batting average and 26 RBIs. De Brun’s strength was his speed, as he scored 35 runs and stole 22 bases.
With their first of five picks on the opening night of the Major League Baseball draft, the Milwaukee Brewers went to a corner bat out of college, third baseman Andrew Fischer from the University of Tennessee. Fischer hit 25 home runs while batting .341 with a 1.257 OPS as a junior for Tennessee this season.

It was no surprise that Bodine would be taken early in the 2025 MLB Draft, and on July 13, his dreams came true. Bodine was selected in the first round, compensation (30th overall) by the Baltimore Orioles, making him the first catcher taken off the board this year.
With the No. 19 overall pick in the 2025 draft, the Baltimore Orioles selected outfielder/catcher Ike Irish out of Auburn University.
The 18-year-old Carlson is the third shortstop the Sox have selected with a first-round pick in the last five years.
