Dunnellon is located in southwestern Marion County at (29.0500, –82.4555), 76 miles (122 km) due north of Tampa. It is bordered to the southwest by the Withlacoochee River, which forms the border with Citrus County. Dunnellon is bordered to the north by unincorporated Rainbow Springs.

Dunnellon is believed by many to be the location where the Spanish explorer Panfilo de Narvaez crossed the Withlacoochee River in the early 1500s. The Town of Dunnellon was formed in 1890 and is named for a pioneer railroad man, John F. Dunn.
