Storm warning flag (US) At sea, a storm warning is a warning issued by the National Weather Service of the United States when winds between 48 knots (89 km/h, 55 mph) and 63 knots (117 km/h, 73 mph) are occurring or predicted to occur soon.

Some coastal stations may display flags, pennants and colored lights to warn mariners of hazardous conditions. Here is what the signals mean. Below the signals are definitions of watches, warnings and advisories.

These flags indicate gale and hurricane warnings. Gale flags are solid red pennants. Flying one pennant indicates a small craft advisory. Flying two red pennants together means there is a gale warning in effect indicating winds of 39 mph to 54 mph. The other storm flag is a hurricane flag.
