If you wonder around your base for about 160 blocks you should find a Fortress. Also check your y-axis since I have been finding the tops of the fortresses around y=60 to y=70.

Nov 19, 2011 · The closest nether fortress to our portal turned out to be over 800 blocks away. We are playing on normal difficulty (not the default easy servers are set too) and in the end we made a bed right next to the portal so that when we died while looking we could get back to the nether fast because we were dyeing a LOT trying to find it.
