York Minster, formally the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, is an Anglican cathedral in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. The minster is the seat of the archbishop of York, the second-highest office of the Church of England, and is the mother church for the diocese of York and the province of York. [6]

York Minster is one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals. Since the 7th century, the Minster has been at the centre of Christianity in the north of England and today remains a thriving church rooted in the daily offering of worship and prayer. The Minster was built for the glory of God.

The west front of York Minster is a fine example of Decorated Gothic architecture, such as the elaborate tracery on the main window. This period saw detailed carving reach its peak, with elaborately carved windows and capitals, often with floral patterns.

Work on the west front in Decorated style began in 1291 and was completed up to the roof of the nave in 1338. The south tower was built in 1433-1477, and the north tower in 1470-1477. The Great West Window, known locally as the 'Heart of Yorkshire', was painted by Master Richard Ketelbarn between 1338 and 1339.

York Minster is the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe, considered to be the jewel in York's crown, it is a masterpiece in stone and stained glass with its foundations rooted in the early history of the nation.

The central tower (to the left) allows visitors to climb to the top to see the city. The front (West) towers contain 36 bells. The left (northwest) tower was the last component added to the Minster and was completed in 1471.

Flanking the front entrance are twin towers. Graceful pinnacles crown their 196 foot height. Inside of their two belfries are 35 bells.
